Price Breakdown:
This Dog Treat Recipe makes about 75 small dog biscuits. I store these in the large Milk-bone tub from Sam’s Club (to give you an idea how many there will be).
Why Make Dog Treats at Home?
This recipe is not only better and tastier, it’ll also save you from overpaying 10x too much for store-bought dog biscuits! Of course, everyone has heard about the recalls on dog food products. So, this would also avoid worrying about whether the stuff you’re feeding your best friend is safe.
Easy Dog Treats Recipe cost breakdown
Those dog treats cost between $10 – $30 for the same amount this recipe makes.
The cheaper ones tend to have ingredients you wouldn’t want to give your best friend!! I found 10-lbs of Milk-bone dog treats on Amazon for around $12. Obviously, larger packages will cost more.
- 2 eggs [dozen eggs @ 1.49 = $0.12 each or $0.24 for two]
- 1/2 cup canned pumpkin [29 oz can contains 3.5 cups, so @ $2.88 – 1/2 C costs $0.82]
- 2 tablespoons dry milk [9.6 oz pkg contains 64.4 tablespoons, so @ $3.98 – 2 T costs $0.06]
- 1/4 teaspoon sea salt [cost approx. $0.01]
- 2 1/2 cups brown rice flour * [24 oz pkg contains 5 cups, so @ $2.79 – 2.5 C costs $1.39]
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley (optional) [cost approx $0.01]
Total cost for this recipe = $2.53 (compared to $10 – $30 for store bought). If you make the small biscuits, that equals about 3 cents each!
Baking treats for your dog that are cheaper, healthier and easy to make = priceless!

Easy Dog Treats (Only 3 Cents Each!)
- Yield: 75 small (50 medium) 1x
Description
Cleo’s Pumpkin Dog Biscuits are a healthy, inexpensive alternative to Milk Bones or Alpo Variety Snaps dog treats. But, they’re really more comparable to expensive dog treats that are easier on puppy’s stomach, and healthier.
Ingredients
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 C canned pumpkin
- 2 T dry milk
- 1/4 t. sea salt
- 2 1/2 C brown rice flour *
* Brown rice flour gives the biscuits crunch and promotes digestion. If your dog has stomach sensitivities or allergies, they may tolerate rice better than wheat. - 1 teaspoon dried parsley (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350.
- In large bowl, whisk together eggs and pumpkin until smooth. Stir in dry milk, sea salt, and dried parsley (if using, it’s optional). Add brown rice flour gradually, combining with spatula or hands to form a stiff, dry dough. Turn out onto lightly floured surface (can use the brown rice flour) and if dough is still rough, briefly knead and press to combine.
- Roll dough between 1/4 – 1/2″ thick. I compared to my dog’s treats and went about the same thickness. I used a bone-shaped cookie cutter I found at Dollar Tree to cut out dog bone shaped biscuits.
- Place biscuits on an un-greased cookie sheet. For a cute effect and to help bake thoroughly, press fork into biscuits (pictured above).
- Bake 20 minutes. Remove from oven and carefully turn biscuits over, then bake additional 20 minutes. Allow to cool completely on rack before feeding to dog.
Notes
DISCLAIMER: This dog biscuit recipe are a healthy everyday treat for dogs. They work well for canines with a sensitive stomach or minor digestive issues. If your dog shows any signs of distress, please consult your veterinarian immediately and remove all food.
